Cancer Care — What to Expect on the Journey

A cancer diagnosis raises many questions. Understanding the steps ahead helps patients and families feel more in control.

Early detection matters

Many cancers are highly treatable when found early. Screening, and not ignoring persistent changes in the body, give the best chance of a good outcome.

Changes worth checking

  • A new lump or swelling anywhere in the body
  • Unexplained weight loss or persistent tiredness
  • A sore or wound that does not heal
  • Unusual bleeding or a lasting change in bowel or bladder habits

How cancer is diagnosed and staged

Diagnosis usually involves imaging and a biopsy, where a small tissue sample is examined. “Staging” then describes how far the cancer has spread, which guides treatment.

Treatment and support

Treatment may include surgery, chemotherapy, radiotherapy, or a combination, tailored to each person. Alongside medical care, supportive services help manage side effects, nutrition and emotional wellbeing.

Care is delivered by a team, and patients are partners in every decision along the way.
